GEORGE STRAIT HITS THE RIGHT NOTES FOR ADVERTISERS

From his sprawling south Texas ranch, George Strait casts a long shadow across the concrete canyons of corporate America and Madison Avenue. As the quintessential country performer and modern-day cowboy, George is pursued by Chevrolet, Tractor Supply, Nokia, Wrangler and others seeking the perfect spokesperson.

In fact, George's reach beyond the boundaries of country music was obviously on the minds of the fans who voted him as the recipient of this year's prestigious Impact Award. The trophy, presented on the Country Weekly Presents: The TNN Music Awards in June, recognized the artist who demonstrated the greatest impact in expanding country music's presence in a variety of media.

"George is what all of our customers would like to be," declares Blake Fohl, advertising exec for Tractor Supply Company. "He's successful, popular, a great horseman and a solid family man.

"Men like George  he's a man's man," adds Fohl. "And, with a lot of our customers being women, George does a super job of attracting female customers. They definitely like him, too. George has been a phenomenal spokesperson."

George's appeal to both men and women  and his "like a rock" dependability  has also matched perfectly with Chevrolet trucks for the past five years.

"George is the epitome of the most dependable, longest lasting country music performer," exclaims a message on the Chevy truck website. "Perhaps the most amazing part of Strait's story is his popularity is still on the rise."

This year, Chevy and Nokia, the international electronics company, courted George to sponsor the mega-successful 10-city Nokia Presents The George Strait Chevy Truck Country Music Festival 2000.

Companies want George because they know he sells. "He represents Wrangler in some of our most successful campaigns ever," says Wrangler exec Brian Goldberg.

George is also a pitchman for himself. His own Strait Premium products line markets everything from dog food to personal grooming products and team roping instructional videos.
His moniker on the George Strait Team Roping Classic has turned the annual rodeo event into an international success. What expert roper George humbly began 18 years ago with his brother Buddy now attracts the best team ropers from all over the world.

George's amazing appeal is best demonstrated by Tractor Supply's quest for the consummate spokesperson.

"Before 1997, we were experiencing enormous growth in sales and new store openings, but many people didn't really know what kind of store we were," acknowledges Tractor Supply's Fohl.

"It was my thought back then that we had to find a spokesperson who had incredible name recognition and who represents the fundamental values our company represents.

"We wanted somebody who was consistent and stable. We wanted someone who's successful. We also wanted someone who's a family man, because our business is geared to the basic needs of America's farm, ranch and rural families.

"Plus, we're very heavily involved in horses with our product selection."

George proudly declares that his love of horses plays a role in his reason for representing Tractor Supply. "So much of my life is measured against my music," explains George. "It's what everybody sees and knows. And that's OK because it's a great part of what I do. But there's a whole other side to me that not a lot of people really understand.

"For my family and me, being able to be outdoors roping, hunting, fishing, raising good quarter horses  and seeing them develop  is a life that is so valuable to me."

Successful companies have learned that George's name is valuable to them. Whether it's trucks, jeans or other products, when advertisers saddle up with the Texas superstar, they're in for a winning ride.
